Why We Publish Openly

Open publication is both a service to the field and a discipline on ourselves — it invites the scrutiny that keeps claims honest.

Two reasons at once

Publishing openly serves others, and it disciplines us. It serves others by making methods and data reusable. It disciplines us because anything published openly can be checked, and knowing that a result will face scrutiny changes how carefully it is made. Openness is not only generosity; it is a commitment to being caught if we are wrong.

This is why open publication belongs in a mission about building for humanity. A closed program can drift into believing its own optimistic figures. An open one is held to account by anyone willing to reproduce the work. The scrutiny is the point, not a side effect.
