Who Fusion Serves
A grounded look at the people and systems a mature fusion supply could serve — and the honest limits on each.
Naming the beneficiaries plainly
It is easy to say a technology serves 'humanity' and mean nothing by it. We prefer to name concrete users and be honest about how far off each is. A mature fusion supply, if the physics and engineering close, could serve several groups — none guaranteed, all conditional.
Concrete users
- Grids that need firm clean power for the hours renewables cannot cover
- Data centers and industry that need steady, dense, sited power (the MetroVolt housing)
- Fixed defense installations that need resilient on-site generation (the Aegis housing, fixed installations, not naval)
- Medicine and science that need neutrons and isotopes the breeder can produce
- Communities exposed to fuel-price shocks and combustion pollution
Two of these are nearer than the rest. The breeder (Hyperion) is studied to produce a tritium class product on the order of 4 kg/yr, about 1.97 kg/yr of helium-3, and 14 MeV neutrons — outputs useful to medicine and science well before any large power fleet exists. Electricity at scale is the longer horizon.
We do not claim fusion serves everyone, soon, or on its own. It is one contribution to a clean firm energy system, with the earliest concrete service being isotopes and neutrons rather than bulk power. See neutrons in service of people and serving defense and civilian needs.
