Energy and the Global South

The largest future growth in energy demand is in the Global South; how it is met will shape both wellbeing and emissions.

Where the demand curve rises fastest

Most future growth in energy demand will come from regions still climbing the development ladder, largely in the Global South. Whether that demand is met with combustion or clean sources is one of the most consequential questions of the century — for the people gaining access and for the shared atmosphere.

Fusion's honest relevance here is long-horizon. Near-term access is best served by distributed renewables, storage, and improved grids, which are available now. Fusion could contribute later to the firm clean tier, especially where dense, weather-independent power near demand is hard to supply otherwise.

What responsibility looks like

We are wary of any framing where a distant, wealthy program claims to be building for regions it is not accountable to. What we can honestly offer is open knowledge and candor, so that if fusion matures, its knowledge base is shared rather than gated. See energy equity and firm power for the underserved.
