Distributed and Centralized: Both Serve People
Uplift comes from both distributed clean power and large firm sources; fusion belongs to the second, complementing rather than replacing the first.
Not a rivalry
Debates about energy sometimes pit distributed generation against centralized plants as if only one can serve people. The honest view is that both do, in different roles. Distributed solar and storage bring power close and fast; large firm sources cover the loads and hours that distribution alone struggles with. A humane energy system uses both.
Fusion is a centralized, firm contribution. The breeder (Hyperion) and burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) are studied as steady, dense sources sited near demand — the MetroVolt housing for data centers, the Aegis housing for fixed defense installations. They complement variable renewables rather than competing with them.
Why say this plainly
- Overselling fusion as a replacement for renewables would be false and harmful
- Distributed clean power is the near-term workhorse for access
- Firm sources like fusion address the hardest tail of the demand curve
