Abundance Without Combustion

The appeal of fusion is a large, steady energy supply that never lights a fire — no smoke, no carbon dioxide at the point of generation.

What 'abundance' should and should not mean

'Abundance' is an easy word to abuse. We use it narrowly: fusion fuels are widely available, and the reaction releases energy without oxidizing carbon. Deuterium comes from water; tritium can be bred; the burner's helium-3 is the hard case (more below). None of this means energy will be free, unlimited, or effortless. It means the fuel is not a scarce, concentrated deposit fought over across borders.

Combustion is the thing we are trying to leave behind

Burning fuels has powered modern life and also filled the air with particulates and greenhouse gases. A source that produces heat by fusing light nuclei rather than burning carbon breaks that link at the physics level. The breeder (Hyperion) is a D-T spherical tokamak; the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) is a D-3He tandem mirror. Neither combusts anything.

The honest limit: fuel abundance does not make a plant. Both machines are design studies. The burner in particular faces a fuel-supply gate — a commercial unit's helium-3 demand runs about 400 times domestic supply, which is why bred and lunar helium-3 matter and why we do not pretend the fuel exists at terrestrial scale today.

So abundance here is a property of the fuel and the reaction, held against engineering realities we describe plainly. See what abundance actually means and fusion fuel and abundance.
