Black-Start Capability
Black-start is the ability to bring an installation's power up from a fully de-energised state without external support; a fusion microgrid must plan for it explicitly.
Why black-start matters
Black-start is restarting a power system from complete shutdown with no outside energy. For a defense installation that has been isolated or has suffered a total outage, black-start is the difference between hours and days to restore the mission.
The challenge for a fusion unit
A tandem-mirror burner is not self-starting. It needs auxiliary power to energise magnets, run cryogenics for its high-field coils, and drive plasma heating before it can produce net output. That means black-start depends on a smaller, independent starting source — storage or a small backup generator — sized to bring the fusion plant's auxiliaries up first.
- A cold-start source (storage or small generator) energises first.
- Cryogenic and control auxiliaries come up before the plasma.
- The fusion unit is then brought to power and picks up mission loads.
Honest limits
Startup time for a high-field fusion machine is not short, and the burner is a design study, not built hardware. Black-start planning must therefore assume the fusion unit is the last source restored, with storage and backup generation carrying the mission during the interval. This reinforces the redundancy theme: resilient sovereign power is a layered system in which fusion is the anchor, not the first responder.
Rehearsed, not improvised
Black-start is only a capability if it is proceduralised and tested: the cold-start source sized correctly, the auxiliary-energisation sequence validated, and the fusion unit's long start-up time accounted for. An untested black-start plan is not resilience. The design treats black-start as a rehearsed procedure with the fusion unit as the last, not the first, source restored.
