Fusion Among Clean Technologies

We reject either-or thinking; fusion should earn a place in a broad clean-energy portfolio, not displace the technologies already working.

Not a silver bullet, a portfolio member

Some technology stories cast a favored option as the one true answer that makes all others obsolete. That framing is both wrong and harmful. The clean-energy transition needs solar, wind, storage, geothermal, advanced fission, efficiency, and grid improvements — all of them, deployed now. Fusion, if it works, joins that portfolio; it does not replace it.

What each does best

Casting fusion as a reason to slow deployment of proven renewables would be a real environmental harm, because the atmosphere responds to emissions cut now, not to promises of a better source later. We are explicit: build what works today, and develop fusion as an addition, not an excuse.

The strongest version of our position is that we would rather be one useful member of a diverse clean portfolio than the imagined hero of a story that slows real deployment. Emissions respond to what is built now. Any framing of fusion that discourages proven technologies today would do environmental harm even if the fusion eventually worked.

This is the humility of firm versus intermittent extended to the whole field, and it is why we practice open science that lifts everyone.
