Energy density lets a power source do more on less land; we treat siting footprint as a design property, stated without inflation.
Density and land
Land is finite and contested. An energy source that delivers steady power from a compact site leaves more land for habitat, agriculture, and communities. High energy density is one of fusion's structural attractions: the fuel carries enormous energy per unit mass, so the fuel-handling footprint is small.
The full footprint is more than the fuel
A fair land accounting includes the plant site, its safety and support areas, transmission to load, and the upstream mining and refining that supply construction materials. It is not only the reactor building. Because siting a plant near demand reduces transmission needs, the burner housings — MetroVolt and Aegis — are studied as co-located firm sources, which can lower the transmission share of the footprint.
We do not publish a headline acres-per-megawatt figure, because the machines are not built and such figures are easy to game by choosing boundaries. What we commit to is drawing the boundary honestly when we do report footprint, per honest environmental accounting.
A further honesty is that density is a claim about the fuel and the reactor, not automatically about the whole enterprise. We commit to counting the site, its support and safety areas, the path to load, and the upstream supply chain, so that a compact core is never mistaken for a compact footprint overall.
