Energy Return and Society

A source worth building must return far more usable energy than it takes to build and run it; that surplus is what powers civilization.

Surplus is the point

An energy source is only useful if it returns substantially more energy over its life than was invested to build, fuel, and run it. That surplus is what runs hospitals, farms, and cities beyond the energy sector itself. A source that barely breaks even, no matter how clean, cannot carry a civilization.

Why we are candid about this

For fusion, the honest statement is that net energy return is exactly what remains to be demonstrated in hardware. The breeder's scientific gain figure, Q_sci of 3.424, is a plasma-physics result from design study, not a whole-plant energy return, and not yet a hardware measurement. We make no hardware net-gain claim before the first-of-a-kind machine operates around 2030.

The distinction between plasma gain and whole-plant return is one we insist on because it is so often blurred. A machine can reach an impressive plasma-physics result and still not deliver net usable energy once the whole plant is accounted for. Which is why our gain figure is presented as what it is — a design-study physics result, not a demonstrated societal surplus.

This candor is central to what we will not claim and to the energy-poverty problem, which needs real surplus to solve.
