Honest Environmental Accounting

The boundary you draw determines the number you get; we set boundaries transparently and refuse to publish figures we cannot defend.

The boundary problem

Almost any environmental metric can be made to look good or bad by choosing where to draw the system boundary. Count only the reaction and fusion looks pristine; count global supply chains and every technology carries a footprint. Honest accounting means stating the boundary explicitly and applying it consistently across comparisons.

Our accounting commitments

Because neither the breeder nor the burner is built, we currently have no measured plant data. Any environmental figure we give is an engineering estimate tied to a specific frozen design, and we label it that way. We will not present an estimate as if it were an operating measurement.

This discipline mirrors our scientific practice: pre-registered predictions, published data with DOIs, and reproducible analysis. Environmental honesty is the same honesty applied to footprint. See reproducibility as environmental trust and what we will not claim.

The failure we most want to avoid is the comparison that quietly uses one boundary for our technology and a wider one for the alternative. Such comparisons are technically true and deeply misleading. Committing in advance to a single, disclosed boundary for both sides is the simplest guard against that kind of dishonesty.
