The breeder makes its own tritium from lithium; a closed fuel loop reduces external supply demand and its environmental reach.
Closing the loop
Tritium is scarce in nature and radioactive with a short half-life. Rather than depend on an external tritium supply, the breeder (Hyperion) is designed to breed tritium in place from lithium using the neutrons the D-T reaction produces. A machine that makes its own fuel reduces the extraction, transport, and handling that an external supply would require.
Breeding ratio as a design lever
The tritium breeding ratio (TBR) is how much tritium the machine produces per unit consumed. Kronos studies TBR as a design lever across 1.1, 1.5, and 1.8 rather than asserting a single value. A ratio above one means the machine can sustain itself and, in principle, provision the next machine — a property with fuel-security and environmental implications.

Handling any breeding blanket and tritium inventory demands care, and we do not minimize that. But the environmental logic of breeding is sound: a machine that manufactures its own fuel from a widely distributed feedstock avoids the mining, transport, and handling that an external tritium supply chain would otherwise impose across many sites.
