The Grid Services A Burner Can Offer

Beyond energy, a firm inverter-based burner can supply capacity, reserves, voltage support, frequency response, and black-start.

More than kilowatt-hours

A grid buys several distinct products. Energy is the bulk product. Capacity is the promise to be available at the peak. Ancillary services keep the system stable moment to moment: reserves, frequency response, reactive-power and voltage support, and black-start. A resource that can supply many of these is more valuable than one that supplies energy alone.

The burner (MetroVolt), firm and inverter-based, is designed to offer a broad portfolio: firm energy and capacity from its steady-state core, and a range of ancillary services from its power-electronics interface.

Why the breadth matters

Providing several services from one asset improves its usefulness to the grid and the load it serves, and lets a co-sited fleet cover more of a campus's needs. It is also why near-demand siting is attractive: many of these services, voltage support, black-start, islanding, are most valuable delivered locally.

Honest framing

This portfolio is a design capability set, credible for a firm inverter-based resource but unproven for MetroVolt. Each service also depends on the unit being available, tying the whole portfolio back to the availability gate.
