Black-Start Capability
Black-start is the ability to energize a dead grid without outside power; a grid-forming burner is a candidate black-start resource near load.
Restarting from zero
After a total blackout, the grid must be rebuilt from generators that can start without any external electricity. Most large plants cannot: they need station power to start. A black-start resource can energize itself and then bring a section of grid back to life, providing the voltage and frequency reference that other plants synchronize to.
A grid-forming, inverter-based burner is a natural black-start candidate provided it can start its own auxiliaries. The burner (MetroVolt), sited near load with grid-forming control, could energize a local network and anchor its restoration, a high-value service that is becoming scarcer as spinning black-start units retire.
What black-start requires of the burner
To black-start, the unit needs enough stored or on-site energy to bring the plasma and the direct-conversion train from cold to output, plus grid-forming inverters to set the initial reference and controls to manage inrush as loads are picked up in blocks. A co-sited battery can provide the initial station power to bootstrap the sequence.
Honest framing
Black-start is a design aspiration that depends on the machine starting reliably from cold, which is itself unproven given the plug-regime gate. It is a credible role for the architecture, verified only once the unit exists and its start-up sequence is demonstrated.
