Brownfield And Repowering Sites

Retiring fossil plants leave behind interconnections and land; a firm burner can reuse that infrastructure to speed near-demand deployment.

Reusing what is already there

A retiring coal or gas plant leaves a valuable asset: an existing grid interconnection sized for large firm output, plus permitted industrial land, roads, and often a trained workforce. Reusing these brownfield sites for new firm generation avoids the slowest parts of a greenfield project, chiefly interconnection queues and land acquisition.

The burner (MetroVolt) is a candidate for repowering such sites. Its firm, dispatchable output can inherit the retiring plant's interconnection, while its water-light DEC design frees it from the water rights the old plant depended on, which can be relinquished or repurposed.

Why the fit is good

Fossil plants were sited near load and given strong grid ties precisely because they were firm. A firm replacement preserves that grid role, unlike a variable resource that would leave the interconnection underused at the peak. The result maintains local reliability while removing combustion and its water draw.

Honest framing

Repowering is a deployment strategy, not a solved machine. The unit still faces the four physics gates and the ~2032/2036 timeline. Reusing an interconnection also requires studies to confirm the new unit's characteristics match the point of connection.
