Without a steam cycle, MetroVolt’s balance of plant is simpler in some ways and novel in others — cooling, electrical, and controls all shift.
A different kind of plant
Balance of plant is everything around the reactor core: cooling, electrical systems, controls, fuel handling, and safety systems. Because MetroVolt uses direct energy conversion instead of a steam turbine, its balance of plant differs from a thermal power station — no boiler, no large steam turbine, and far less cooling water.
That simplifies some subsystems and introduces others. There is no steam loop to maintain, but there is a high-power DEC output chain, cryogenics, and magnet power supplies to run continuously. The net is a plant shaped around electrical and cryogenic systems rather than thermal-hydraulic ones.
Readiness of the pieces
Cryogenics and magnet power draw on breeder experience; the DEC output chain is burner-specific; controls extend the breeder’s plasma-control and digital-twin work. Most balance-of-plant subsystems are conventional or breeder-adjacent, with the DEC chain as the novel element.
