The Black-Start Sequence
Restoring a grid proceeds in careful blocks; a near-load firm unit can serve as the anchor that energizes each step.
Bringing a grid back in blocks
Grid restoration is deliberate. A black-start unit first energizes a small, controlled section, called a cranking path, then picks up load in blocks, keeping generation and load balanced and voltage within limits at every step. Adding too much load at once trips the fragile restarting island. Larger plants are started along the path using power the black-start unit provides.
A near-load burner (MetroVolt) with grid-forming control can serve as the anchor for such a sequence in its local area, providing the reference voltage and frequency and the ramping capacity to pick up successive blocks of load.
Why grid-forming matters here
Only a grid-forming source can set the reference that a restoring island needs. Grid-following inverters cannot start a dead grid because they require an existing reference. This is why the burner's inverter design intent includes grid-forming control.
