No Particulates, SOx or NOx

Because fusion does not burn anything, it emits no fine particulates, sulfur oxides, or nitrogen oxides at generation.

Fine particulate matter, sulfur oxides, and nitrogen oxides are the principal combustion pollutants regulated for public health. Particulates penetrate deep into the lungs; sulfur and nitrogen oxides form acid rain and secondary particulates and irritate the respiratory system. All three come from oxidizing fuel. Fusion oxidizes nothing, so it produces none of them at generation.

Why these pollutants form

Particulates come from incomplete combustion and mineral content in fuel. Sulfur oxides come from sulfur in the fuel. Nitrogen oxides form when combustion heats air enough to react its nitrogen and oxygen. Each is a direct consequence of burning something at high temperature. A fusion plant has no combustion flame and no flue gas, so none of these formation pathways exists.

Honest scope

This is a precise operational claim. It does not assert that a fusion plant has zero environmental footprint — manufacturing, construction, and materials have impacts common to all infrastructure. It states specifically that the combustion pollutants regulated for air quality are not produced where fusion generates power. That is a defensible, physics-based property, not a contested comparative number.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.

No combustion means no combustion pollutants — a clean, defensible statement about how fusion generates power.
