Fusion vs Solar PV
Solar is abundant, clean, and simple to run but variable; fusion is designed as the firm clean partner that covers the hours solar cannot.
Solar photovoltaics convert sunlight directly to electricity with no moving parts, no fuel, and no emissions in operation. It is one of the fastest-growing clean sources and belongs in every sunny grid. Its limitation is intrinsic: it produces only when the sun shines, so its output is variable and diurnal. Fusion is designed not to compete with solar but to firm it.
Capacity factor and timing
Solar's capacity factor — average output as a fraction of nameplate — is typically around a quarter, reflecting nights, clouds, and seasonal sun angle. Peak output arrives midday, often ahead of the evening demand peak. This mismatch is why solar-heavy grids need either storage to shift energy or firm capacity to cover the shortfall, especially in winter and at high latitudes.
Footprint trade-offs
Solar uses land or rooftop area in proportion to energy delivered; utility-scale arrays occupy large tracts, though land can sometimes be shared with agriculture. Solar uses little water in operation and few exotic materials, but the diffuse resource means a large physical footprint. Fusion is compact per unit energy but is not yet built. Each has a role: solar for abundant daytime energy, fusion for firm output.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
A grid can be mostly solar for energy and still need firm clean capacity for reliability. That is the partnership fusion is aimed at.
