Dispatchability & Load Following
Dispatchable sources adjust output on command; fusion is designed to hold firm output and follow load, complementing variable renewables.
Dispatchability is an operator's ability to set a plant's output on command — to raise it when demand climbs and lower it when it falls. It is what lets a grid balance in real time. Variable renewables can be curtailed downward but cannot be dispatched upward at will, since they depend on the resource. Firm generation provides the upward dispatch a reliable grid needs.
Following the load
As demand rises through the morning and evening, and as renewable output swings, some resource must move to fill the difference. Historically that has been gas and hydro. A decarbonized grid needs clean dispatchable resources for this. Fusion is being designed to hold firm output and, as a design objective, to follow load — giving grid operators a clean lever to balance against renewable variability.
Honest scope
Fusion plants are complex thermal or plasma systems, and rapid ramping is an engineering goal rather than a proven feature; the machines are not yet built. What is defensible is that fusion is designed for firm, controllable output that complements renewables, filling the dispatch role currently held by fossil and hydro without their respective emissions or geographic limits.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
Dispatchable clean power is the missing piece renewables cannot supply alone; fusion is aimed squarely at it.
