Air Quality & Combustion

Combustion sources emit pollutants that harm health; fusion produces none of them at generation, sharing that clean-air property with renewables.

Beyond carbon dioxide, burning fuel releases pollutants that directly harm human health: fine particulates, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and, from coal, mercury and other toxics. These contribute to respiratory and cardiovascular disease near and downwind of combustion plants. Non-combustion sources — wind, solar, hydro, fission, and fusion — emit none of these at generation.

The health burden of combustion

Air pollution from fossil combustion is a well-documented public-health problem, distinct from its climate impact. Particulates and gases from smokestacks and tailpipes are associated with significant harm. Removing combustion from electricity generation improves local air quality directly, which is a benefit shared by all non-combustion clean sources, fusion among them.

Honest scope

This is a claim about operation, and it is solid: fusion has no smokestack and no combustion, so it emits none of these pollutants where it generates. As with carbon, there are minor lifecycle contributions from manufacturing and construction, common to all built infrastructure. Kronos does not assert any contested comparative pollution figure; the defensible statement is simply that fusion adds no combustion pollutants to the air at generation.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.

Clean air at generation is one of fusion's most solid, defensible, health-relevant advantages over combustion.
