Fusion vs Geothermal
Geothermal is firm and clean where the crust cooperates; fusion aims to deliver the same firm clean role without geological constraints.
Geothermal energy taps heat from the Earth's crust to drive turbines, giving firm, steady, low-carbon output with a small surface footprint. Conventional geothermal is limited to regions with accessible high-temperature resources; enhanced geothermal systems aim to widen that range. Where it works, it is an excellent firm clean source — much like the role fusion is designed to fill more widely.
Firmness and siting
Geothermal runs continuously with high capacity factors, often above seventy percent, because the heat source is always present. Its main constraint is geological: economically drillable heat is concentrated in specific regions. Some sites face induced-seismicity considerations from fluid injection, and reservoirs can decline over time without management. Fusion's firmness is designed to be independent of local geology.
Footprint and emissions
Geothermal has a small land footprint and low lifecycle carbon, though some fields release naturally occurring gases and require water management. Fusion similarly is compact and low-carbon, and is not geographically constrained. The two are natural allies in the firm-clean category: geothermal where the crust provides, fusion where it does not.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
Both belong in the firm-clean column. Fusion's contribution is geographic reach: firm clean power for grids without geothermal resources.
