Fusion vs Onshore Wind
Onshore wind is a widely deployed clean workhorse but weather-driven; fusion targets the firm output that covers still, cold, high-demand periods.
Onshore wind is among the most widely deployed clean energy sources and provides large amounts of low-carbon energy. Like solar, it is variable: output rises and falls with the wind, sometimes over minutes and sometimes across multi-day weather systems. It is a core building block of a clean grid, complemented rather than replaced by firm clean power.
Variability across timescales
Wind's capacity factor is typically around a third onshore, but the average hides the problem: extended low-wind spells can coincide with peak demand, especially in winter cold snaps when high-pressure systems bring calm air. These are the hardest hours for a wind-heavy grid, and they cannot be solved with short-duration storage alone.
Footprint and materials
Wind turbines spread across large areas, though the land between towers often remains farmable. They use steel, concrete, copper, and rare-earth magnets, and blades pose end-of-life recycling challenges. Operating water use is negligible. Fusion's footprint is compact per unit energy but uses specialized materials such as superconducting magnet tape; both face materials and recycling questions, addressed elsewhere in this section.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Wind and fusion are complements: wind for abundant clean energy, fusion for the firm capacity that keeps the lights on when the wind drops.
