Fusion vs Biomass
Biomass is dispatchable but combusts fuel and competes for land and water; fusion delivers firm output without combustion or crops.
Biomass generation burns organic material — wood, agricultural residue, or dedicated energy crops — to produce heat and electricity. It is dispatchable and is sometimes counted as low-carbon on the argument that regrowth reabsorbs the CO₂ released. In practice its carbon balance is contested and depends heavily on feedstock, land use, and time horizon, and it emits particulates at the stack.
Combustion is the common thread
Unlike wind, solar, hydro, and fusion, biomass is a combustion source: it oxidizes carbon and releases CO₂, particulates, and other combustion products at generation, even if some carbon is later reabsorbed by regrowth. The regrowth timescale and land-use change determine whether it is genuinely low-carbon. Fusion has no combustion and no CO₂ at generation, avoiding this debate entirely.
Land, water, and feedstock
Dedicated energy crops consume land and water that could grow food or remain wild, and feedstock logistics add continuous transport. Fusion needs no crops, minimal water relative to its output, and a compact footprint. Where biomass uses genuine waste residues it can have a role, but as a firm clean source it carries burdens fusion is designed to avoid.

Design-and-simulation framing. The Kronos machines are today design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated. Breeder construction is planned to begin Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium targeted around 2030. Comparisons on this page are qualitative and use only public, defensible figures; nothing here is a performance guarantee.
On combustion products and land pressure the contrast is clear; the honest note remains that fusion is not yet built while biomass operates today.
