Why Openness Builds Credibility
A number you can rerun on your own laptop is worth more than a number you are asked to believe, so we hand over the means to check us.
Credibility is earned by exposure, not assertion
In a field where no privately built machine has yet produced sustained net energy, a company's claims are only as good as the evidence a skeptic can independently examine. Kronos treats external reproduction as the real test. If our breeder design point — Q_sci 3.424 at 88.7 MW fusion power, 9.86 MA plasma current — only exists inside our own tooling, it is an assertion. Once the inputs and code are public and someone else recovers the same figure, it becomes a shared result.
What exposure protects against
- Selection effects: publishing the full pipeline makes it hard to quietly keep only the favorable runs.
- Silent errors: independent reruns catch mistakes our own team is blind to.
- Overclaiming: an honest gate stated in public cannot later be softened without someone noticing.
- Drift: a frozen design point plus version control means the record cannot move under readers' feet.
The cost we accept
Openness has real costs. Competitors read our papers. Our mistakes are visible. The four burner gates — an overstressed plug coil, an operating regime far beyond any device, a helium-3 demand with no terrestrial supply, and an availability shortfall against hyperscale uptime — are all published rather than buried. We accept this because a design program that hides its weak points cannot claim to have tested them.
