The Fuel-Supply Gate

A single commercial burner would demand roughly 400 times the domestic helium-3 supply, so it is gated on a fuel that does not yet exist at terrestrial scale.

The fuel problem, quantified

The burner runs on deuterium and helium-3. Helium-3 is extraordinarily scarce on Earth: a single commercial burner unit would demand roughly 400 times the entire domestic supply. The machine is therefore gated on a fuel that simply does not exist at terrestrial scale — a physical supply fact, stated in the open.

Why this ties the two machines together

The fuel gate is the reason the breeder and burner are one program rather than two products. The breeder (Hyperion) is designed to produce about 1.97 kg/yr of helium-3 as one of its products, and a lunar helium-3 supply is part of the long-range picture. The burner cannot be fueled from existing terrestrial stocks; a bred and off-world supply is what the gate points toward. See the breeder paper.

Why publish it

A generator with no fuel is not a working machine, and pretending otherwise would be the opposite of designing in the open. Stating the 400x gate explains, honestly, why the burner is a longer-horizon target and why the breeder's product mix matters to the whole program. See the full set at the honest gates.
