The Firm-Clean Pair

Fusion and renewables are complements, not rivals: variable sources do the bulk decarbonization, firm clean power closes the reliability gap.

Vision, not specification. This page describes a future that fusion could help make possible — not a product promise, forecast, or performance claim. The Kronos machines today are design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated; construction of the first breeder is planned to begin in Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind first tritium targeted around 2030.

Two jobs, one grid

A decarbonized grid has two distinct jobs. The first is producing enormous quantities of clean energy cheaply — the job wind and solar already do superbly and will keep doing. The second is being there at every hour regardless of weather — the job that variable sources, even with storage, do only up to a point. Treating these as one contest has produced a false choice.

Firm clean generation is built for the second job. It does not out-compete a solar farm at noon; it holds the grid up during the windless, sunless stretch that would otherwise be covered by gas. In that division of labor, more firm clean power means more renewables can be deployed, because their weak hours finally have a clean answer.

Why not just build more batteries

Storage is essential and expands every year, but it shifts energy across hours, not comfortably across a still, overcast week. Covering rare long lulls with storage alone means building vast capacity that sits idle most of the time. Firm generation covers those lulls with a steady source instead, which is why serious decarbonization plans keep a firm clean component in the mix.

Kronos is designed to be that component. The intent is partnership with the renewable buildout, not competition with it.
