Abundant Clean Energy

If fusion delivers firm power at scale, energy stops being the scarce input that everything else is rationed against.

Vision, not specification. This page describes a future that fusion could help make possible — not a product promise, forecast, or performance claim. The Kronos machines today are design and simulation studies: the breeder (Hyperion) and the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt). No hardware net-gain has been demonstrated; construction of the first breeder is planned to begin in Q2 2027, with first-of-a-kind first tritium targeted around 2030.

Scarcity as the hidden tax

Almost every hard trade-off in modern life traces back to energy being scarce, dirty, or both. Fresh water is limited because desalination is energy-hungry. Recycling is limited because reprocessing materials costs energy. Clean industry is limited because high-temperature heat has meant combustion. When clean energy is abundant, each of these ceilings lifts at once.

Abundance here does not mean infinite or free. It means clean firm generation that can be added where and when it is needed, without a proportional rise in emissions, water use, or land disturbance. That combination — clean and firm and scalable — is what fusion is being designed to add to a grid that renewables are already decarbonizing.

Firm is the operative word

A grid can be cheaply decarbonized to a point on wind, solar, and storage alone. Past that point, the last increment of reliability — the calm, dark winter week — becomes the expensive, dirty part, and is often met by keeping fossil plants on standby. Firm clean power fills exactly that role: steady output that holds the grid up when variable sources are quiet, so the fossil backstop can finally be retired.

Kronos is designed to be that firm partner rather than a replacement for renewables. The two machines occupy different niches — the burner (Aegis / MetroVolt) for direct, on-site electricity, the breeder (Hyperion) as the tritium and neutron foundation — but both point toward the same outcome: capability without a combustion bill.
