The Responsibility of Building
Choosing to build a nuclear-adjacent energy technology is choosing a long chain of obligations; we try to name them all.
Building is a moral act, not only a technical one
To design and, if the physics closes, build machines that produce neutrons, handle tritium, and generate power at scale is to take on responsibility across many domains at once: to the workers who build them, the communities that host them, the grid that depends on them, the public that must trust them, and the field whose credibility is affected by how we behave.
This page gathers the threads of the impact section into a single account of responsibility. None of the obligations can be waved away by good intentions, and none of them are optional for a program that wants to be trusted with something this consequential.
The chain of obligations
- To workers: honest employment expectations and a fair transition
- To communities: consent, verifiable safety, and local benefit
- To customers: candid reliability and fuel realities, including the burner gates
- To the grid and public: firm power that is actually firm, or an honest account of why it is not yet
- To the field: no overclaiming that spends shared credibility
- To the future: stewardship, decommissioning, and open knowledge
The instruments we use to meet these obligations are the same throughout: openness, frozen designs, pre-registered predictions, reproducible records, honest gates, realistic timelines, and a refusal to claim net gain before FOAK. Responsibility is not a separate program from the science; it is the science conducted honestly and made public.
The honest caveat
We are at the beginning. These are design and simulation studies, and most of the responsibilities described here attach to machines not yet built. Stating them now — before we could be forced to — is the point. It is how a program earns the right to be trusted with what it hopes to build.
