The Just Transition

Clean power that leaves fossil-sector workers and regions behind is not a success; the transition has to be fair to be durable.

Who wins and who is left

Decarbonization moves work away from coal, gas, and oil regions. Whether that move is fair determines whether it holds politically and morally. A clean-energy source that concentrates its benefits in a few affluent places while stranding fossil communities repeats an old injustice under a new banner.

Fusion's workforce overlaps meaningfully with fossil and conventional-nuclear power operations: plant operators, high-voltage engineers, welders, radiation-protection staff, and controls specialists. That overlap is an opportunity to route displaced workers into new work — but only if programs are built deliberately to do so. Overlap does not create transition on its own.

Conditions for a fair transition

We state a limit honestly: engineering constraints, not fairness alone, decide where a plant can go. Grid connection, water, geology, and proximity to demand all bind. A just transition works within those constraints; it cannot override physics.

The honest caveat

This is aspiration measured against a machine that is not built. Fusion cannot deliver a just transition it has not yet earned the right to attempt. What we can commit to now is the standard: if and when a fleet is built, fairness to affected workers and regions is a design goal, not an afterthought. See who benefits and who decides.
