Measuring Impact Honestly
Impact claims deserve the same evidentiary discipline as physics claims: real metrics, honest ranges, and no credit for the unbuilt.
Apply the physics standard to impact
This site holds physics claims to a strict standard: measured versus simulated, honest ranges, pre-registered predictions, reproducible records. Impact claims deserve the same rigor. Too often, social and economic impact is asserted with round numbers and no method. We would rather say less, measured well, than more, measured loosely.
That means several refusals. We do not publish headline job numbers for an unbuilt program. We do not translate physics into economic figures — this site carries no economics by design. We do not credit fusion with impacts that depend on choices beyond our control. And we mark every impact claim with the gate or condition it depends on.
What honest impact measurement looks like
- Describe the shape and mechanism of an effect, not invented magnitudes
- State conditions and gates alongside every claim
- Distinguish what the technology does from what deployment choices decide
- Report effects that can be observed, once there is something to observe
Once machines exist, impact becomes measurable: actual employment, actual grid contribution, actual community effects, actual material use. Until then, honest impact work is mostly about describing mechanisms and naming conditions accurately — and resisting the pull to quantify what cannot yet be measured.
The honest caveat
The most honest thing this section can say is that most of its subject matter is not yet measurable, because the machines are not yet built.
