Water For Natural-Gas Plants
Gas plants range from water-heavy combined-cycle steam to lower-water simple-cycle turbines, but firm gas generation still relies on a steam bottoming cycle.
Two gas architectures
- Simple-cycle: a gas turbine alone; lower water but lower efficiency, used for peaking
- Combined-cycle: a gas turbine plus a steam bottoming cycle; higher efficiency but with a condenser and its cooling water
Efficient, firm gas generation is combined-cycle, which means it carries a steam cycle and therefore a cooling-water load, typically met by wet towers. The more efficient the plant, the more it leans on that steam bottoming cycle.
The firmness comparison
Gas is valued for firm, dispatchable power, the same property MetroVolt targets. But firm, efficient gas means combined-cycle, which means water. MetroVolt offers firmness without the steam-cycle water, addressing the same load need with a different water profile.
Honest scope
This page compares generation-side cooling water only, not fuel supply, emissions, or economics, which are out of scope here. The narrow, robust point is that the efficient form of firm gas generation carries a steam-cycle water burden that direct energy conversion does not.
