Water For Coal Plants

Coal generation is a steam cycle through and through, with high cooling-water consumption plus extra water for ash handling and emissions control.

A steam plant plus extras

A coal plant burns fuel to boil water and drive a steam turbine, so it carries the full condenser cooling-water load. On top of that, coal plants often use water for ash sluicing and for wet flue-gas desulfurization, adding to their total water demand beyond cooling alone.

Why this matters as a baseline

Coal is the high-water-intensity end of the generation spectrum and a large share of the fleet MetroVolt-style firm power could displace over time. Its water use is dominated by the same condenser cooling that direct energy conversion eliminates.

The comparison, kept narrow

We compare only water here, not emissions or economics. Even so, the contrast is stark: a coal plant's water use begins with a large evaporative cooling load and adds more on top, while the burner's begins near zero because it has no steam cycle to cool.
