Blowdown & Water-Treatment Waste

Evaporative cooling concentrates dissolved solids, forcing periodic blowdown and treatment; a system with no evaporative loop produces neither stream.

Why blowdown exists

In a wet cooling tower, pure water evaporates and leaves dissolved minerals behind, so the circulating water grows saltier. To keep scale and corrosion in check, operators discharge a portion, the blowdown, and replace it with fresh makeup. Chemical treatment controls scale, corrosion, and biological growth.

Why the burner produces none of this

These streams are all consequences of evaporating water in an open recirculating loop. MetroVolt's cooling loops are closed and rejected to air; nothing evaporates to concentrate solids, so there is no blowdown, no evaporative-scaling chemistry, and no associated waste. Sealed coolant is treated once and recirculated, not continuously bled and replaced.

A cleaner facility profile

Beyond consuming almost no water, removing evaporative cooling removes a category of liquid waste and its permitting. The environmental profile of the water story is not only "less water in" but also "less contaminated water out."

Scope

Ordinary facility wastewater still exists at any site. The specific claim is that the power plant's evaporative-cooling waste streams, blowdown and its treatment residues, do not arise when there is no evaporative cooling loop.
