A Sustainable Fuel Cycle

Sustainability here means a fuel cycle whose inputs are abundant, whose loop is closed, and whose operation does not deplete a scarce resource.

Three properties of a sustainable cycle

A fuel cycle can be called sustainable when three conditions hold: its inputs are effectively unlimited, it does not accumulate an unmanageable waste legacy, and it can be run indefinitely without depleting a finite deposit. The fusion fuel cycle is designed to meet all three.

How the cycle closes

Only two materials enter: deuterium from water and lithium for the blanket. Inside the plant the tritium is bred and recovered, so the fuel regenerates rather than being consumed from an external store. Helium-3 emerges as a useful product. The loop is closed in the sense that the plant does not depend on a continuing external fuel supply once running.

Honest gate

The closed cycle is a design goal for machines that are still simulation studies; demonstrating true net breeding and recovery is open work. Construction begins Q2 2027. See the closed fuel cycle and sustainability metrics.

Sustainability as a set of physical facts

Calling a cycle sustainable is only meaningful if it rests on physical facts rather than aspiration. Here the facts are concrete: the inputs are effectively unlimited, the tritium loop regenerates internally, and the cycle leaves no long-lived fuel waste. Each is a checkable property of the fuel and the reactions, which is why the sustainability claim can be stated plainly and defended.
