Manufacturing Readiness
Manufacturing Readiness Levels ask a separate question: can the design actually be built, repeatably and to spec.
Design readiness is not build readiness
A technology can be sound and still be unmanufacturable at rate. Manufacturing Readiness Levels (MRLs) run a parallel 1-to-10 scale that asks whether the materials, tooling, workforce, and quality systems exist to produce a design consistently. For a defense program that will need replicated units, MRL is as decisive as TRL.
The honest position
- High-field REBCO magnets require specialty conductor whose supply chain is maturing but not yet at fleet volume.
- Nuclear-grade fabrication (welding, inspection, traceability) is well established in industry but must be qualified for these specific components.
- The FOAK breeder is, by definition, a first article — its purpose includes proving the manufacturing route, not assuming it.
FOAK to NOAK to BOAK
The build sequence is designed so manufacturing learning is captured: the first-of-a-kind (FOAK) unit surfaces the hard fabrication problems, the next-of-a-kind (NOAK) applies the fixes, and the balance-of-kind (BOAK) fleet benefits from a stabilized process. Manufacturing readiness therefore rises across units by design, and none of it is assumed to be solved on paper.
