Transmission Constraint Relief
Generating firm power at the load relieves congested transmission, letting a data center grow without waiting on new lines it does not control.
Growing without new lines
In many regions the barrier to new large loads is not generation but transmission — the lines and substations needed to move power to where the load wants to be. Building transmission is slow and outside a data-center developer's control. Firm generation at the load sidesteps the constraint by not moving the power far in the first place.
A co-located burner supplies most of the campus's energy over a short internal path, so the campus's demand on regional transmission shrinks to backup import and occasional export. That reduces the transmission a new site must secure, which is often the pacing item for large compute builds.
This is a physical and schedule argument, kept free of any economic framing. The point is that on-site firm power decouples a campus's growth from the transmission build-out it would otherwise wait on. It does not remove the grid connection — the availability gate makes the backup tie essential — but it shrinks the connection from full-requirements supply to backup service, which is far easier to obtain.
Relief is partial and honest: the site still needs a capable interconnection for backup and islanding, but it no longer needs new transmission sized to carry its entire load continuously.
