Siting a burner beside both the load and a grid connection gives the campus a firm on-site base and an independent backup path in one location.
Next to the load and the grid
The preferred MetroVolt site sits next to the compute it powers and next to a capable grid connection. The first proximity delivers the co-location benefits — short electrical path, low losses, minimal transmission dependence. The second provides the independent backup the availability gate requires.
Grid-adjacency is what makes the hybrid practical in one footprint. A site far from the grid could co-locate generation but would have a weak backup; a site far from the load could have strong backup but would lose the co-location benefits. The intersection — near load, near grid — is where a firm, redundant, low-water campus is easiest to build.
The burner's physical characteristics make such sites feasible. Low water use from direct energy conversion removes the need for a river or large cooling pond, and the bounded shielding from low-neutron D-³He burn keeps the exclusion footprint compact enough for developed, grid-served land.
Choosing grid-adjacent sites is therefore not just convenient; it is how the design satisfies both firmness and the backup independence that Tier III demands, In practice this narrows site selection to developed land that already carries a substation and a load nearby, which is exactly the kind of parcel where compute demand is concentrating.
