Helium-3 is one of the rarest useful isotopes on Earth. It is not mined, not manufactured directly at scale, and effectively produced only by the decay of tritium. Global supply is measured in kilograms per year and has historically depended on drawing down decaying nuclear-weapons tritium stockpiles, a source that is finite and shrinking.

What it is used for

The quantum-computing use is the fastest-growing. Every dilution refrigerator that cools a superconducting quantum processor needs a helium-3 charge, and the supply constraint is a recognized bottleneck for scaling quantum hardware.

Why a breeder is a natural source

A tritium-breeding foundry produces helium-3 as an inevitable coproduct of holding tritium. Hyperion's ~1.97 kg/yr coproduct is meaningful against a global supply of only a few kilograms per year. The value here is strategic availability of a scarce enabling material — this page makes only the physical and supply case, with no commercial content.

This page describes a design-and-simulation study, not a built machine. Construction begins Q2 2027; first-of-a-kind (FOAK) first tritium is targeted near 2030. No net-gain claim is made before FOAK.
