Lunar Helium-3 Context
Lunar regolith is the only known large helium-3 reservoir; it is a long-horizon resource, described honestly without overclaiming.
The only known reservoir of helium-3 large enough to matter for energy is not on Earth. The solar wind has implanted helium-3 into the Moon's regolith over billions of years. This is the resource that could, in principle, close the burner's fuel gate at fleet scale — and it is deliberately described here as a long-horizon prospect, not a near-term supply.
What is real and what is not yet
- Real: helium-3 is present in lunar regolith, implanted by the solar wind, and is the largest known reservoir.
- Not yet: extraction, processing, and return of lunar helium-3 at energy scale is unproven and far off.
- Honest: this is a strategic reason the burner's fuel path points to the Moon, not a claim that lunar fuel is available.
- Complementary: near-term terrestrial helium-3 comes from breeder co-production, not the Moon.
We describe lunar helium-3 as context, not capability. The concentration in regolith is low, requiring large volumes of processed material per unit of helium-3, and the logistics of lunar surface operations and return are formidable. None of this is solved; all of it is long-horizon.
Why it belongs on a resources page
A complete, honest resource account for the burner cannot end at the ~400x terrestrial gate; it must name the reservoir that could resolve it. Lunar helium-3 is that reservoir. We state its scale and its long-horizon, unproven status together, so the strategic logic is clear without overclaiming availability.
