Decommissioning and Land Restoration
A compact plant with a bounded material inventory is straightforward to decommission and return its land to other use.
End-of-life matters as much as construction for the land question. A generation site should be returnable to other use when the plant retires. The scale of that task depends on the plant's footprint, the materials in it, and how much of the site was ever disturbed.
What makes restoration tractable
- A compact footprint means less area to remediate and restore.
- A bounded, characterized material inventory makes segregation and recycling planable.
- Activated components from neutron exposure are handled as a known, decaying material stream, not an open-ended contamination.
- Sites chosen on previously developed land carry a lower restoration bar.
Neutron activation of structural materials is real for both machines — more so for the D-T breeder (Hyperion) with its 14 MeV neutron flux, less so for the low-neutron (5.44%) burner. Activated material decays over characterized timescales and is managed as a material stream, which is covered in the safety and materials pages rather than as a land-permanence problem.
Honest framing
We do not claim instant or effortless decommissioning — no such thing exists. The defensible claim is that a compact plant with a bounded, characterized inventory presents a tractable, plannable restoration task, and that the land can be returned to productive use. The activation timescales are stated openly rather than minimized.
A useful contrast is with sites whose end-of-life burden is open-ended. A bounded, characterized inventory that decays over known timescales is a planning problem, not a permanent liability: components can be segregated, allowed to decay, and then recycled or disposed of at the appropriate level. That is a very different situation from a persistent, unbounded contamination.
