What Fusion Waste Is Not
Clearing up common misconceptions: fusion waste is not spent fuel, not high-level, not actinide-bearing, and not permanent.
Because fusion is new to most audiences, its waste is often imagined by analogy to fission. Several of those analogies are simply wrong, and naming what fusion waste is not is as clarifying as describing what it is.
Four things it is not
- Not spent fuel: fusion burns grams of hydrogen isotopes; there is no fuel assembly that becomes waste.
- Not high-level waste: there is no heat-generating, long-lived disposal category from fusion.
- Not actinide-bearing: no uranium in the machine means no plutonium or transuranics bred.
- Not permanent on geological scales: the activity is dominated by nuclides that decay over decades.
What it is
Fusion waste is activated structural material — mostly low-level after decay — plus a tritiated stream and routine operational waste. It is real, it is radioactive, and it is managed by established routes: decay storage, recycling, clearance, and near-surface LLW disposal. The point of listing what it is not is to prevent the fission mental model from importing hazards that fusion does not have.
Naming the absent categories is also a licensing convenience: it lets a review focus on the waste that exists rather than re-litigating hazards the fuel cycle cannot create. The clearer the boundary between what fusion produces and what it cannot, the more efficiently the real waste can be regulated and managed.
This candor is the whole approach: state the absent categories plainly, then be equally plain about the waste that does exist. These are design-and-simulation positions for machines not yet built, grounded in fuel-cycle physics.
