Tritium as a Strategic Material

Tritium is a scarce, short-lived isotope essential to several national capabilities; a domestic fusion breeder is a candidate production route.

Scarce and perishable

Tritium is a radioactive isotope of hydrogen with a half-life of about 12.3 years. That short life means any stockpile decays continuously and must be replenished; roughly five percent is lost each year to decay alone. Tritium is also difficult to produce, which makes it one of the most strategically sensitive isotopes.

The breeder as a source

The breeder (Hyperion) is designed to produce tritium on the order of the 4 kg/yr class in its design study, using its 14 MeV neutrons to breed tritium from lithium. The tritium breeding ratio is treated as a design lever, studied across values of 1.1, 1.5, and 1.8, which sets how much tritium the machine can supply beyond its own needs.

Why the breeding lever matters

The tritium breeding ratio, studied across 1.1, 1.5, and 1.8, sets how much tritium a machine yields beyond what it consumes. A ratio near 1.1 roughly sustains the fuel cycle; higher ratios open a surplus that could serve strategic supply. Achieving a high ratio depends on the blanket design and on neutron economy, and Kronos treats it as an explicit design lever rather than a fixed promise. The honest range communicates both the opportunity and the engineering work still required to reach the upper end.
