Human factors design shapes displays, alarms, and procedures so operators make good decisions under time pressure and complexity.
Why human factors matter
Even with automation running the fast loops, humans decide intent, judge results, and intervene when something falls outside the machine's programmed scope. How well they do this depends on how information is presented and how procedures are structured. Human factors is the discipline of designing for reliable human performance.
Display design
Operators cannot absorb raw data streams during a discharge. Displays must aggregate: show the plasma state at a glance, highlight deviations from plan, and surface off-normal flags prominently. Poor displays bury the one signal that matters among hundreds that do not, delaying recognition of a developing problem.
Alarm management
Too many alarms are as dangerous as too few. When every minor deviation raises an alert, operators learn to ignore them, and a real alarm is missed in the noise. Good alarm design prioritizes, suppresses redundant alarms, and reserves the strongest signals for conditions that genuinely require human action.
Procedures and workload
Clear procedures for routine and off-normal situations reduce the cognitive load of deciding under pressure. Automation should carry the time-critical actions so the human is never asked to react faster than a person can. The design goal is to keep the operator's workload in the band where attention and judgment are sharpest.
In the Kronos program
Kronos designs its control room so automation owns the millisecond loops of the Hyperion breeder and the burner generators while operators focus on intent and oversight. Displays surface plasma state and off-normal flags clearly, and alarms are prioritized to avoid overload. Operators rehearse both routine and fault procedures in the flight simulator ahead of first plasma.
