The logistics tail
Fuelled generation has a hidden dependency: the road, pipeline, or airlift that keeps the tanks full. In a fixed defense installation this logistics tail is a vulnerability — it can be interdicted, weather-blocked, or simply outrun by demand. Every hour of generation is an hour of prior resupply.
How Aegis breaks the tail
D–3He fuel is energy-dense to an extraordinary degree, so a practical on-site inventory represents years of operation. Deuterium is extracted from ordinary water and is effectively unlimited. Helium-3 is the scarce partner, but the strategic point is that it is bred on Earth by the Hyperion breeder rather than mined or imported — the fuel loop is domestic end to end.

The honest counterweight
Independence from convoys is real, but it rests on a fuel that does not yet exist at terrestrial scale. A single commercial burner's helium-3 demand is roughly 400× domestic supply today. That is exactly why the breeder-bred and, later, lunar helium-3 pathways matter: convoy independence is a property of the deployed fleet, not of a fuel you can buy now.
So the claim is staged: the physics removes the recurring logistics tail, and the supply chain to make that real is the breeder foundry plus, over time, lunar helium-3. The distinction to hold onto is between the fuel's energy density, which is a settled physical fact and is what makes years of on-site inventory possible, and the fuel's availability at scale, which is a supply problem the breeder programme exists to solve. Convoy independence follows the second, not just the first.
