Black-Start Capability
Black start is the ability to bring the plant and its island up from a fully de-energised state without any outside power.
Starting from black
Most large generators cannot start themselves: they need external power to run pumps, controls, and excitation before they can produce output. A black-start capable plant carries enough stored energy on-site to energise its own auxiliaries and reach self-sustaining operation with no grid present. For a fixed installation whose whole point is to survive a grid outage, black start is a requirement, not a feature.
The Aegis sequence
Stored energy — batteries plus the cryogenic plant's thermal reserve — powers the vacuum, cryogenic, and control systems first. Plug and throat fields are ramped, fuel is admitted, and the plasma is brought to its operating point. Once direct energy conversion is producing net electrical output, the auxiliaries transfer onto the machine's own supply and the unit begins forming the installation bus.

Honest constraints
Black start is a design capability to be demonstrated on the test burner, not a fielded result. The end-plug operating regime is far beyond any existing device (166–830×), so start-up dynamics cannot be fully post-dicted today. A resilient installation therefore keeps a modest conventional black-start source as backstop until the sequence is proven, and sizes stored energy for more than one start attempt.
The correct claim is narrow: the architecture is designed to black-start, storage is sized for it, and the sequence is a primary test-burner objective.
