The settled design

Best-of-a-kind (BOAK) is the endpoint of the learning curve: the design settled into a repeatable, manufactured product. By this stage the physics is validated, the build is proven, and the machine can be produced with known lead times and predictable output, exactly what a foundry needs.

What standardization means

Why standardize

A small foundry fleet needs its units to be alike so that supply is predictable and operation is uniform. Standardization at BOAK turns a set of individually built machines into a product line, which is what makes a reliable isotope and neutron supply possible.

The end of the risk program

By BOAK, the major physics, engineering, and operability risks have been retired, at G1, G2, and G3 on FOAK, and through NOAK build and operation. BOAK is not about discovery; it is about consistency. This is the stage where the breeder is genuinely a foundry rather than an experiment.

BOAK describes the intended settled form of a machine not yet built. It is the goal the FOAK-to-NOAK-to-BOAK sequence is organized to reach, and the basis for keeping the breeder fleet small and supply-driven.
