Proliferation Resistance
Fusion uses no fissile material, needs no enrichment, and produces no plutonium — removing the classic weapons pathways.
A core concern in nuclear regulation is that fuel-cycle materials could be diverted toward weapons. Fusion is structurally resistant to this because it does not use, produce, or require the materials that weapons need. There is no enriched uranium, no plutonium, and no fissile fuel cycle to safeguard against diversion into a chain-reacting device.
The pathways that do not exist
- No enrichment: deuterium and helium-3 are not enriched fissile material.
- No plutonium production: there is no uranium being irradiated to breed plutonium.
- No fissile inventory: nothing on site can form a critical mass.
- No chain-reaction technology: the machine cannot be repurposed into a fission device.
The one material warranting safeguards attention is tritium, which has weapons relevance in other contexts. Kronos treats tritium under strict accounting and physical security — see tritium safeguards — but tritium alone is not a fissile material and cannot produce a nuclear yield by itself. The absence of fissile material is the decisive point.
Why this matters
Removing the fissile fuel cycle removes the central proliferation concern of nuclear energy and simplifies the safeguards and security regime. It is also part of why fusion fits the byproduct-material framework rather than the reactor-and-special-nuclear-material framework. See no fissile material.
Proliferation resistance here is not a mitigation added on — it follows from the fuel cycle having no fissile component.
