Logistics Tail and Operational Tempo

The size of the logistics tail sets a ceiling on how fast and how far an operation can move, because power demand travels with the force.

Fuel ties tempo to supply

Operational tempo, the rate at which activities can be sustained, is bounded by the slowest supply constraint. For power-hungry fixed sites, fuel is often that constraint. When power demand must be met by continuous resupply, tempo is limited by how fast and how safely fuel can arrive.

When power is generated on site from an energy-dense fuel with long resupply intervals, tempo decouples from the fuel-delivery schedule. Planners gain freedom because the power constraint is no longer a moving target that must be re-supplied on a short cycle.

A planning-side benefit

The benefit is not only fewer convoys; it is planning simplicity. A predictable, long-horizon fuel need is easier to schedule, protect, and reason about than a continuous short-cycle demand. This reduces the cognitive and logistical load on planners.

There is a second-order effect: when tempo is fuel-limited, planners must hold reserve fuel and reserve transport against surges, which enlarges the very inventory and movement they are trying to protect. Decoupling tempo from resupply lets planners hold a smaller, steadier fuel posture, because demand no longer spikes the delivery schedule. The planning benefit and the exposure benefit reinforce each other, since fewer surge deliveries mean both simpler schedules and fewer exposed movements at exactly the moments operations are most stressed.
