VR and AR for Plant Operations

Immersive and augmented displays place data in spatial context, useful for training, maintenance planning, and layout review.

Immersive versus augmented

Virtual reality replaces the user's view with a synthetic environment; augmented reality overlays information on the real one. For a plant, VR is suited to training and design review of spaces that do not yet exist, while AR fits maintenance, where a technician sees guidance registered to the real equipment in front of them.

Where immersion helps

Where it does not

Immersion is poor for dense quantitative comparison and for tasks needing precise reading of many numbers; a flat, high-resolution display remains better for analysis. Immersive sessions also cause fatigue and cannot be sustained like desk work. Use each medium for what it does best.

Practical constraints

Registration accuracy, latency (which causes discomfort), field of view, and text legibility all bound what AR and VR can deliver. Safety-critical instructions must never depend on a fragile overlay; AR augments judgment, it does not replace validated procedure.

Kronos use

Because the breeder and burner are pre-construction, VR review of the simulated plant supports layout, access, and training work ahead of the Q2 2027 construction start, drawing on the same geometry as the digital twin.
