The Physics of Helium Scarcity
Both helium isotopes are hard to keep on Earth because helium atoms are light enough to escape the atmosphere, and helium-3 is rare in the first place.
Why helium leaves
Helium is the second-lightest element, and as a monatomic noble gas its atoms move fast at any given temperature. In the upper atmosphere a nontrivial fraction of helium atoms reach escape velocity and are lost to space, a process that continues steadily. Unlike most industrial gases, helium released at the surface is not merely diluted but eventually removed from the planet entirely, which is why venting it is a permanent loss.
Where terrestrial helium comes from
Almost all helium-4 on Earth is produced underground by the radioactive alpha decay of heavy elements like uranium and thorium; each alpha particle is a helium-4 nucleus that captures electrons and accumulates in gas deposits over geological time. It is extracted as a minor component of certain natural-gas fields. This is a slow, finite accumulation, and once a field is depleted the helium is not replaced on human timescales.
The special scarcity of helium-3
Helium-3 is scarcer still. It is not produced by ordinary alpha decay, so it does not accumulate in gas fields the way helium-4 does. Natural helium contains only about one part per million of helium-3. The Moon's surface holds more, implanted by the solar wind, which is why lunar helium-3 is sometimes discussed, but on Earth the practical source is tritium decay, as covered elsewhere in this section.
Consequences
These facts together explain why helium conservation and recovery are taken seriously, why helium-3 in particular is treated as a strategic material, and why a source of helium-3 tied to an ongoing activity rather than to finite legacy stocks, such as fusion breeding, is structurally significant. The scarcity is rooted in physics, not merely in market conditions.
